Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before booking your first session.

What is the difference from a relaxing spa massage?

A relaxing spa massage primarily aims at general relaxation, with light, uniform pressure over the whole body. Therapeutic massage, on the other hand, targets specific areas - contracted lower back, stiff neck, tense calves - with techniques adapted to each issue: progressive pressure, kneading, gentle mobilisations.

The difference is felt from the very first session: you leave relieved of a real tension, not just relaxed on the surface. This functional approach is what sets Pilates Tamarin apart from hotel spas.

How often should I have a therapeutic massage?

It depends on your situation. As a general guide:

One-off tension: a single session is often enough to relieve it

Chronic tension (back, neck): 1 session per week for 3 to 4 weeks, then as maintenance

Maintenance and prevention: 1 session per month to sustain the benefits

During our initial exchange, I adapt the frequency to your daily life and your goals.

How many sessions does it take to relieve chronic tension?

Relief is often felt from the very first session - muscles relax, mobility improves. For tension that has been present for several weeks or months, I generally recommend 3 to 5 close-together sessions for a lasting result.

Every body is different: some people respond very quickly, others need a few more sessions. I guide you throughout based on your progress.

Is therapeutic massage painful?

Therapeutic massage can sometimes produce a 'good pain' sensation: that targeted pressure on a contracted area that you recognise and that feels beneficial. It is very different from sharp or uncomfortable pain.

I always work in tune with how you feel and adapt the pressure in real time. If something is too intense, you let me know and I adjust immediately. The goal is progressive relief, not discomfort.

Can I come during pregnancy?

As a precaution, therapeutic massage is not performed during the first trimester. From the second trimester onwards, certain areas and techniques can be adapted, particularly to relieve lower back pain and neck tension so common during pregnancy.

Medical advice beforehand is recommended, especially in cases of high-risk pregnancy. Feel free to contact me to discuss this before booking.

How long after giving birth can I start therapeutic massage?

I recommend waiting until the end of your postnatal follow-up and getting the go-ahead from your doctor or midwife, generally 6 to 8 weeks after a vaginal delivery or a little longer after a caesarean.

Postpartum massage is particularly beneficial for relieving the back and neck strained by breastfeeding and carrying the baby. It is one of the most requested treatments at the studio.

What oil is used during the massage?

I use gentle vegetable oils, adapted to the area being massaged and your skin type, generally a jojoba or coconut oil, light, well-tolerated and non-greasy. If you have any allergies or specific preferences, please mention them during our initial exchange.

The oils are chosen for their quality, skin gentleness and low fragrance so as to suit those sensitive to scents.

Do I need to undress completely?

No, not necessarily. You keep your underwear on and only the area being worked on is uncovered, the rest of the body remains draped with a clean sheet. Your modesty and comfort are an absolute priority.

I guide you at each step so that you feel comfortable from the start to the end of the session. Nothing happens without your agreement.

Is therapeutic massage suitable for chronic back pain?

Yes, chronic back pain is one of the most common issues at the studio. Therapeutic massage can help relieve lumbar contractures, improve mobility and reduce muscular tension accumulated around the spine.

It is particularly suited to pain linked to a sedentary lifestyle, prolonged sitting at work or poor posture. Combined with Pilates sessions, it supports more complete and lasting recovery.

How long do the effects of a therapeutic massage last?

The immediate effects (more supple muscles, improved mobility, a feeling of lightness) are felt right after the session and can last from a few days to two weeks depending on the person and the intensity of the tension treated.

To extend the benefits, I recommend staying well hydrated, avoiding intense effort in the following 24 hours and practising gentle movements. Combining sessions with a regular Pilates practice helps to maintain these effects over time.

What are the contraindications of therapeutic massage?

Therapeutic massage is not indicated in the following situations:

Fever or ongoing acute infection

Phlebitis or venous thrombosis

Recent unhealed fracture

Unstabilised cancer, without prior medical advice

Skin condition on the area to be massaged (wound, skin infection)

First trimester of pregnancy

If in doubt, speak to your doctor before booking, or contact me directly - we will find the best approach for you together.
