Lymphatic drainage
Lymphatic drainage after a flight: recover in Mauritius

After 11 or 12 hours in the air to connect Europe to Mauritius, the excitement of landing in paradise is huge. Yet, as you step off the plane, the body takes the hit. Heavy legs, swollen ankles, a drawn face and overall fatigue… Jet lag is not the only culprit: the long immobility in a pressurised cabin weighs just as much.
To clear these discomforts straight away and start your holiday (or get back to your routine) on the right foot, lymphatic drainage is the most effective recovery secret.
What happens in your body during 12 hours of flight?
The lymphatic system is the body's detox system. Unlike blood, which is pumped by the heart, lymph has no automatic pump. It circulates mainly thanks to the contraction of our muscles (the calves in particular) and to breathing movements.
During a long-haul flight, several factors block this circulation:
- Prolonged immobility: Seated for hours in a cramped space, the muscle pump of the legs is completely at a standstill. Lymph stagnates, causing massive water retention in the lower limbs.
- Pressurisation and dehydration: The dry cabin air alters the body's fluid exchanges. To make up for the lack of hydration, the body starts to store water wherever it can, adding to the swelling.
- Gravity: The prolonged sitting position creates pressure at the groin creases, blocking the main lymph nodes of the lower body.

The immediate benefits of post-flight lymphatic drainage
Lymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmic and precise massage that applies pressure and pumping along the lymphatic vessels to get fluid circulation moving again.
1. Bye-bye heavy legs and swollen ankles
This is the most spectacular effect. By releasing the inguinal nodes and moving the lymph back up towards the upper body, the practitioner unclogs the tissues. From the very first lymphatic drainage session, your legs regain their lightness and you can finally put your shoes back on without a struggle.
2. An overall detox of the body
Immobility at altitude promotes the build-up of toxins and metabolic waste. By speeding up the lymphatic flow, the massage helps the body flush out this waste far faster through the kidneys. It is an internal "reset".
3. An immune boost and less jet lag
Travelling tires the body and temporarily weakens our defences (close quarters in the cabin, disruption of the biological rhythms). Getting the lymph moving again also stimulates the circulation of white blood cells, essential to the body's defence. The deeply relaxing effect of the touch also soothes the nervous system, helping the body settle into Mauritian time more easily.
4. A decongesting effect on the face
Water retention does not only affect the legs; the face is often puffy after a night on a plane. A suitable drainage helps redefine the features, reduce the bags under the eyes and bring back a fresh, radiant complexion from the very first day in the tropics.
The extra tip at Studio Pilates Tamarin
If you land in Mauritius and drop your bags in the West, popping into Studio Pilates Tamarin is the perfect idea to erase the marks of the journey. Morgane masters the most refined drainage techniques to target post-travel water retention.
The combined trick: To maximise the effects of the drainage, Morgane can suggest a few gentle mat stretches or targeted movements to reopen the hip and pelvis joints, often completely locked up by the plane seat.
